A Story of Unfortunate Run Outs
Brentham C.C. | 190 for 7 (40 overs)
Washington C.C. | 188 all out (36 overs)
10-man Wash came very close to overhauling Brentham's 190 for 7. Aff Naseem scored 72 (his highest ever for the Wash) and Sandeep 52, but the lower order batsmen couldn't quite do enough against the opening bowlers when they returned and the last wicket fell with just 3 still needed for victory. A third of the side were run out unfortunately. David Gluckman (5) went in the early overs, ‘Kiwi’ Harris attempting a rather sharp single. Aff Naseem ran himself out through some hesitation when he was well set and seemingly on the way to a century. And Peter Kloss (2) was the last man out as the game stopped for a moment, waiting for a decision on a strong LBW shout. The fielding side were the first to react and took the bails off with the hapless Kloss still standing down the pitch. The game was played in largely sunny conditions on a decent pitch, but at a playing-field venue in Ealing, the changing rooms of which resembled a bleak concentration camp. The backbone of the Wash innings was a 104 run partnership between Naseem and Sandeep Kuckreja (52), the highest partnership in the Washington season so far. Both played beautifully with control and strength. It helped that the run rate required was just over 4 an over, and the batsmen accepted the responsibility of building a partnership and the team total very well. Naseem actually slightly outscored Sandeep and reached his 50 first. With them at the wicket is seemed Washington couldn’t lose. But Naseem’s run out signalled a bit of a collapse and despite a 28-run partnership between Paul Knight (15) and Lee Fogarty (11), Washington couldn’t complete the job. Earlier all the bowlers had played well, Lee Fogarty (2-25) and Gary Malcolm (2-35) deserving particular mention, achieving results through their consistent line and length. Better luck next time! Man of the Match: Aff Naseem Packing the kit: Peter Kloss
