Sunday 8th May 2005 vs Alexandra Park II C.C.

Wash come Undone

Washington C.C. 155-8
Alexandra Park II C.C. 156-5

Washington came badly unstuck at Alexandra Park on Sunday.  Batting first, Wash set their opponents a target of 155 which they reached with 13 overs to spare and five wickets in hand.

Skipper Justin Gurney said afterwards:  ‘I reckon 180 was par on that track:  we fell a bit short with the bat.’

Indeed, the skipper was one of only two players really to look comfortable on a pitch still full of early season inconsistencies. He came to the wicket with his side at 74-5, a series of batsmen having struggled in the face of tight bowling from Greg Ebbutt (0-7 off six) and Buckley (2-17).  Pete Demetri (7) and Paul Irons (17) were both out lbw to balls which kept low;  Tony Harris (16) was caught off a miscue; and both Matthew Cragoe (9) and David Gluckman (11) were run out.

However, in partnership with Donald Campbell, playing his first game of the season, Gurney pushed Washington’s target up over the hundred.  The pair added 48, with the skipper dealing the bowling a series of massive blows. Campbell, meanwhile, played with elegance and composure until he was bowled by Khan (1-35) for 24.  This brought in Brad Hitchcock (2) and Richard Jones (6 not out), who kept the skipper company until he, too, was run out with 3 balls of the innings left.

Washington’s bowlers began well, Peter Kloss bowling Vij (2) with just 10 on the board, but a couple of chances went down, as Edwards (39), Ebbutt (22), and Buckley (24) kept Park ahead of the required run-rate.

A couple of truly brilliant catches were eventually taken - a stinger by Irons at short cover, and a salmon-like forward  leap by Harris  - to give Washington a late glimmer of hope, but Adnan (54 not) tied up the game for Park with a high speed half century.

There was time for Kloss (2-51) and the superb Jones (1-17) each to take a wicket, but as the clock ticked round to 7pm, the winning boundary crossed the ropes and consigned Wash to their first defeat of the new season.

Washington:  Gurney (c), Hitchcock (+), Demetri (sub:  Stoughton), Cragoe, Harris, Irons, Campbell, Gluckman. Jones, Legg, Kloss.

Man of Match:  Justin Gurney:  superb batting and a wicket

Packing the Kit: Pete Demetri for falling ill and forcing Eric Stoughton into his whites after a heavy tea!
