Sunday 28th July 2002 vs Northwick Park C.C.

Justin's Jubilant ... but it's Heaven for Evans!

Washington C.C. 312 for 4 (32 overs)
Northwick Park C.C. 81 all out

Justin Gurney and Gary Evans were the stars as Washington recorded yet another massive victory on Sunday against Northwick Park. Gurney smashed an imperious century, his first for the Wash, and later Gary Evans grabbed a dramatic hat-trick to hasten the home side's demise.

It all left skipper Dave Walker searching for the right words. 'In a normal season', he said, 'anyone getting a hundred or a hat-trick would be head-line news: it's typical of the way it's going for us at the moment that we should get both in one game!'

It has indeed been an amazing month for Wash, whose batsmen have flourished in the sunny conditions. But yesterday's effort of 312-4 in just 32 overs took the statistics into a new dimension.

Walker won the toss and opted to bat first. On a smallish pitch blessed with a very fast outfield, Washington's batsmen made hay. Pete Demetri (29) and Paul Irons (23) both scored freely, but it was Mark Wittet's stylishly composed 59 that gave Gurney the platform he needed.

With awesome power he smashed the wilting Northwick attack to all corners of the ground, hoisting several sixes into the bargain. When Walker finally called in his men, he stood unbeaten on 127.

Northwick Park's batsmen faced a mountain, and their cause wasn't helped when Nick Tidey (1-29) and Richard Minion (3-15) snaffled early wickets and the irrepressible Irons (2-32) bagged a brace.

A composed innings of 24 by young Ian Milton, who showed some nice timing, delayed the inevitable, but the outcome was hardly in doubt.

And when the end came it did so in dramatic fashion, Gary Evans grabbing a first hat-trick for Washington as Northwick's resistance was extinguished.

The game ended with Washington victors by 231 runs.
