Sunday 10th June 2001 vs Pacific C.C.

Rain rain go away

Washington C.C. 126 all out
Pacific C.C. 127 for 5

Pacific chalked up a second consecutive outdoors victory over Washington on Sunday. In a rain-drenched encounter, they passed Washington’s total with five wickets and three overs to spare.

Yet for much of the day a very different outcome looked likely. Wash skipper Dave Walker had won the toss and elected to bat first. From the start, the wicket proved difficult for the batters: in-form Aussie batting star Pete Demetri fell in the third over, and despite some stout resistance from Grant MacDonald(18) and Walker (7), Wash were soon toiling at 39-4.

The mainstay of the second half of the Washington innings was David Gluckman (24). He shared in partnerships of 15 with Nick Wickers (6), 16 with Johnny Roche (2) and of 45 with Gary Evans, who top scored with 28. After two breaks for rain, and 45.4 overs in wet, almost wintry conditions, the last wicket fell with the total on a disappointing 126.

Newcomer Doug Grattan was the pick of the Pacific bowlers, taking 3-32, whilst reliable new ball combination Alexander (1-19) and Roberts (2-13) proved as much of a handful as always.

Washington came out after the tea break with all guns blazing and quickly reduced Pacific to an even more parlous state than they had themselves been in. With Gary Evans (2-35) and Rupert Pyrah (3-31) in superb form, the Pacific top order crumbled. Evans clung on to a brilliant catch in the gully to get rid of Pacific danger-man Peter Hollman, and at 39-5, Wash seemed well on the way to victory.

However, well-paced batting by the redoubtable Jim Davies (39) and newcomer Knott (48) tore the match from Washington’s grasp, and the home side completed what was eventually a comfortable victory with some three overs to spare.
