Sunday 4th June 2017 vs Hollybush C.C.

Clin-TON's finest hour!

Washington C.C. 259-4 (35 overs)
Hollybush C.C. 145-7 (35 overs)

A sizzling century from skipper Clinton Dugmore set up a straightforward win for Washington against Hollybush on Sunday. Dugmore’s century – his first for the Wash - contained 19 fours and 5 sixes, and was the key contribution as Wash eased to victory by 115 runs in this 35-over match.

The game was played at Wheathampstead’s lovely ground and the pitch did what it always seems to do – tease the bowlers with the offer of some variable bounce, but give the batsmen full value for their shots on the closely cropped outfield.

Wash batted first and Dugmore and Andrew Speck (16) negotiated the vagaries brought out of the wicket by the new ball and laid the foundations for all that came after with an opening stand of 49.

Speck’s dismissal – to a catch at cover-point – brought in Mark Molloy for his Washington debut. He set about the bowling crunching some powerful shots all around the wicket and seemed set for a 50 when he was unluckily run out backing up at the bowler’s end.

All the while the skipper was going about his murderous business. It was a typical Dugmore innings: solid defence combined with elegant classical drives on the offside and powerful lofted strokes to the leg side boundaries: the Bush just didn't know where to bowl to him.

He eventually returned a catch to the bowler, but by that time the damage had been done. The last three overs saw Andrew Gibbs (0) come and go, and lively cameos from Stuart Marsh (11 not out) and Richard Brown (14 not out).

Wash took tea with 259 on the board.

Chasing such a large total was always going to be a challenge, but Wash made it difficult from the off.

Luke Mitchell (0-12) bowled with his usual parsimony, and Richard Creed picked up a wicket in the course of an excellent 7-over spell.

Gibbs replaced Mitchell at the pavilion end and despite nearly losing a hand trying to take a caught and bowled chance that was driven back at him like a rocket, took 2 good wickets.

Marsh (1-32) could have had a five-fer on another day, as batsmen repeatedly nicked the ball through and over the slips; Brown followed up his excellent batting with a three wicket haul; and Mike Egan laid down a marker for the future with three excellent overs of right arm spin at the death.

All this was supported by some fantastic ground fielding - Wash looked very sharp and both Molloy and Creed took very good catches.

So a good afternoon for the Wash, and especially for the skipper- a maiden Washington ton and a victory! Let’s add ‘Man of the Match’ and make it a perfect day!
