Sunday 31st July 2016 vs Hollybush C.C.

Last ball victory for the Washington!

Hollybush C.C. 146/7
Washington C.C. 148/8

A fantastic day for the game - not only was the weather superb but the entire North Middlesex pitch had been prepared for our use and prepared to its usual high standard. The scene was set for a re-match with our old rivals, the Hollybush.

The Hollybush opening order were comprehensively taken down by Mitch and Apollo - searing pace and accuracy at one end from Luke and Apollo at the other end hitting the seam. So much so that Apollo was on a hat-trick having removed their number 2+3 batsmen in consecutive deliveries (ironically these wickets came off extra deliveries due to two "wides" earlier in his over). The number 4 bat survived the hat-trick but fell to Apollo for a duck regardless. The bowling attack remained on cue, Luke continued with some merciless murderous throat slashing bowling - and at the halfway mark, 20 overs, Hollybush were 35-5 with an early finish seemingly on the cards.

However the Bush rallied and took advantage of the fast outfield and alas we let the game slip slightly, they finished on 146 all out. Nonetheless the Wash walked into the tea break confident...

Cue some flashing shots and several batsmen making decent starts, but the Bush skipper rallied his troops and one by one the wickets fell and the Wash began to slip behind the run rate. Walshy got off to a blistering start before he was dismissed, and later at a critical point in the game Aff stepped up and took charge with some powerful strikes to get us back on par with the required run rate, before he too fell.

With wickets tumbling and the game slipping away the wily skills and experience of Matt "the Professor" Cragoe and the "Legend that is Khan" were to be decisive. Matt played a superb inning, demonstrating some excellent placement and timing, scoring 32 - very well done. With Russell injured and 11 needed off 10 Luke came to the crease effectively as the last man and immediately counterpunched with aggressive running to keep us in the game. 11 off 10 became 3 off the last ball and what a moment for Khan to hit his first boundary of his innings and secure the victory off the last ball.

Hats off to Clint again for his leadership, ensuring everyone chipped in with bat and ball to make the game, and well done to Ian Moore for playing on despite a leg injury. A truly magnificent result and a great game thoroughly enjoyed by both sides.
