Tom Harper reporting

On the weekend where George Groves spat the dummy, Jos Butler came up agonisingly short for England and the world cup draw was called into further question, another major sporting disappointment was felt as the Wash were brought down to earth with a bump.

On the back of an undefeated season, the hopes and dreams of a nation of cricket lovers were dashed when the beloved Wash were issued what can only be described as a drubbing at the hands of Vagabonds… a 10 wicket drubbing to be precise. After a highly enjoyable 2 hour trek across London, the Wash were at the ground early, whites on and looking sporadically athletic in the warm ups. Having passed the opposition already enjoying a few sharpeners in the pub on the way, optimism for another victory wouldn’t have been misplaced. However time plotting wicket celebrations and tour outfits could have been better spent in the nets.

On a sunny day the Wash were put into bat on what can best be described as a “spongy” deck. Credit where credit is due, Vagabonds opened up with two accurate seamers who quickly put the Wash under the gun. The ball was doing little in the air but Perton (5-14) was making it talk off the pitch. Clearing out 5 of the top 7 and having 3 caught behind or bowled. Save for a series of missed catches in the slips, the Wash were on track to equal Putney’s 50 odd the previous week.

Only Stu Marsh (24) offered any form of real resistance, the highlight of which being a trademark slap for 6 over long on. The outfield was equally slow and the Wash missed out on a good ten runs through some tardy running…. A particular highlight being Peter Kloss lapping Gary Malcolm whilst he was caught ball watching.

We were eventually cleaned up for a paltry 77, it was time for an early tea and some soul searching.

Some good teas and a rousing speech couldn’t help spark the Wash back into action. Without the extra yard of pace that Vagabonds openers brought to bear, the Wash were at the mercy of a slow deck and sadly paid the price; gifting Vagabonds the total in a mere 14 over.

The openers offered only one chance which we inevitably shelled…. The less said about the game the better.

However, there is always next week. Many people will be keen to make amends for such a poor display and getting the Wash back to winning ways. Let’s have a good turn out and ensure that last weekend was only a blip.
