Luke Mitchell reporting

Weather was the topic of conversation during the week leading up to and including Easter Sunday’s fixture. Other matters complicated the situation. Our scheduled opponent Barnes could not assemble a team for the bank holiday, so Shawn went to the internet in search of an opponent. Overhanging all of this was an ominous weather forecast, after weeks of settled weather. Heavy rain was predicted, although the exact... details changed repeatedly throughout the week such that after initial predictions of being slammed head-on it seemed we might escape the rain after all.

The day began with heavily overcast skies, and many phone calls and texts to discuss the situation. A local shower around 11am proved indecisive so we proceeded to the ground. Our opponents, Pecos XI made the trip from south London. They are a team which like us, was inspired by a pub – near Bangalore, India. The team was nearly all expats, and they were keen as mustard. As start time came and went it was drizzling, and it was decided to go for a 20/20. Shawn won the toss and elected to field, a crucial decision.

Kloss & Murrain opened the bowling and started off tight, with Kloss taking a wicket in the second over. Mitchell, Crook, Mariner & Kripps also bowled, with Nick Kripps taking 3 wickets on debut bowling very accurate left arm spin and variation in pace – one caught and two bowled including the opposition’s top scorer. Welcome to the Washington Nick! Murrain came back and took two wickets in two balls to round off the innings, with Pecos XI finishing on 108/9. Washington fielded well in the slippery conditions, although a few tricky catches went to ground.

In reply Turner and Hill opened the batting in deteriorating conditions, and after a watchful couple of overs Hill started connecting, but just as the momentum was building he was trapped in front for 19. Dugmore came in and looked solid from the beginning, forming a 34 run partnership with Turner, who was only undone caught off an unplayable delivery from a player called Ram with an action reminiscent of Muralitharan. Aff came in and struck a nice couple of shots, before being bowled by another mystery ball from Ram. This brought Fogarty to the crease for a 35 run partnership, ended with just 5 runs needed. Clinton scored the winning runs with a beautifully clipped four, scoring 40 fine runs.

After the game we were treated to a massive feast of chops, roast chicken and lamb casserole with salads and chips. The captain mused “Winning the toss and fielding first was vital, as conditions deteriorated as the game progressed. The Washington bowled and fielded superbly given the conditions, and Clinton played a fine and composed innings to bring us home. Fair play to the opposition for sticking it out in truly atrocious conditions!”.
