Washington Cricket Club - 40th Anniversary Year

The team on Saturday enjoyed a fabulous day out at the prestigious Balliol College ground in central Oxford. The batsmen made good work of first use of the pristine pitch, won at the toss by skipper Ash Cruickshank. Ash was able to declare on 191 for 5, Shayam Pushpanath making 76*, Matt Holt 39* and new boy Leo Lang 26.

Washington's fielding was of a good standard, aided by an almost carpet-like outfield. The bowlers had some success too, restricting Hatairoi to 83 for 5 with 16 of the final 20 overs remaining. There were wickets particularly for Ahir Pushpanath (2-35) and Andy Crook (2-32), and a blinding catch at point by Mylo Portas.

Wash were still hopeful of a win at that stage, with perhaps the draw being the most likely result, given the required rate of almost 7 runs per over. However Hetairoi no.7 bat Wilman had other ideas and proceeded to smash the bowling attack to all parts. Ash rotated the bowlers but there was nothing he could do to stem the flow of runs and Hetairoi achieved their target with 3 1/2 overs to spare, still 5 wickets down. Wilman was 85 not out.

Still, a great game in superb sunny conditions – cricket was the winner!
