Peter Kloss reporting

The club had a glorious day out on Sunday at Vagabonds, with the weather, setting, cricket, result and pub afterwards all making the long drive down to Hampshire well worthwhile.

Vagabonds won the toss for this declaration game, and inserted Washington on a green wicket and in fine weather. Skipper for the day Shawn Hill and Peter Kloss opened up the innings and survived the first few overs against accurate bowling with a hint of swing. However Kloss then chipped one to point. Hill (35) and then Rob Tidey (16) were scoring freely and this continued with Aff Naseem and then Andrew Crook blocking at the other end. However Hill was then trapped LBW, given by a twitchy-fingered Stuart Marsh, and Tidey was stumped to leave Wash on 72 for 5 in the 18th over.

That the final innings score was more than double this owed almost everything to two men who would not normally be considered front line batsmen. Both Andrew Anderson (31) and Stuart Marsh (39) hit their highest ever scores for the Washington. They shared a 7th wicket partnership of 33 which was most significant in this low scoring game. Kevin Read hit a sweet 4 in his 6, but Gary Malcolm and Russell Pendry both departed without troubling the scorers unfortunately. Then the final wicket tie-up between Marsh and Terry Tidey yielded a further 24 vital runs with Tidey’s scoring contribution being precisely nil! He survived a hat-trick ball though, and showed he can still run. Washington were all out for 153 in 32.1 overs.

Following a good tea (the wide and extensive variety of sandwich flavours was commented upon), Vagabonds resumed the match. The openers progressed steadily against Andrew Anderson (1-28) and Terry Tidey (0-22), but it took the introduction of Shawn Hill to the attack to make the first breakthrough. In fact he took the first 3 wickets to fall with excellent full swinging balls which also moved off the seam. However Vags were just about halfway to their target by this time.

Peter Kloss (4-34) had come on at the over end, also swinging and seaming the ball away, and grabbed a couple of wickets. One was an excellent catch at point by Gary Malcolm. The game now was in the balance, Vagabonds needing around 60 more with 5 down.

An agonising partnership of 25 then ensued, but Kloss enticed the opening batsman Humphreys (40) who was still there to sky one to Hill at 3rd man – he doesn’t drop those! This opened the gates and Hill took 2 more wickets in quick succession with fast swinging balls for an LBW and a bowled.

8 down, 35 needed. Gary Malcolm (0-20) replaced Hill (5-35) after his marathon 13 over spell, and got hit for a few boundaries bowling too short unfortunately. The match was getting closer and closer; any result was possible with 20 odd needed from the final 5 overs.

However Kloss produced a beauty of an away cutter to take the top of off stump and the 9th wicket, and a couple of overs later Anderson bowled the no. 11 and the Washington players celebrated ecstatically. Less than 3 overs remained in the game and the Wash had won by 9 runs only.

Washington celebrated their victory in good spirits at the Sun Inn in Bentworth afterwards before heading back to the smoke.

Man of the Match: Shawn Hill for a 5-fer, 35 runs, and good captaincy to win the game by a small margin.

Packing the kit: Hill would give the award to Stuart Marsh (something about Hill being several meters down the track….), but I couldn’t possibly comment.
