Sunday 5th August 2012 vs Hollybush C.C.

Bush On Form

Hollybush C.C. 194 for 6 (35 overs)
Washington C.C. 133 all out (29.2 overs)

Peter Kloss reporting

Washington lost to rivals Hollybush on Sunday despite some spirited performances. Batting first the Bush were largely contained for 29 overs, but they scored at will in the last 6. Their total of 194 for 6 proved too much for Washington, despite 49 from Rory Guy. Wash ended up all out 60-odd runs short.

There were 3 debutants for the Wash on this day, Nick Goldreich and Chris Douse who were roped in by Wash regulars, and Paul Anrich who volunteered to help the team be 11, Hollybush having the luxury of 12 available.

Skipper Peter Kloss lost the toss and Washington took the field in a 35 over game. The pitch in Harpenden was fairly green and slow, but the weather bright with sunny intervals.

Chris Douse (1-37) and Peter Kloss (1-48) opened up with medium pace. Chris particularly bowled really well, exploiting some lively pitch conditions from his end, and ensuring that the Bush progressed slowly to 27 for 1 after 8 overs, Kloss achieving the breakthrough.

Rory Guy (1-14) and returning Wash son, Taran Persaud (1-25) took over and both took wickets with outfield catches in their first over to leave the score at 38 for 3. After this setback Hollybush then progressed quietly for a period. Tom Allott (1-14) and Gary Malcom (1-44) took over the bowling, and Allott particularly tied the batsmen down superbly. He exploited the same bounce which Douse had enjoyed, but also turned the ball down the hill considerably. The batsmen found Allott really difficult to get away and he took a wicket, Gary Malcolm taking a good catch at leg slip.

The Bush score was 111 for 4 after 29 overs and Wash were hoping to restrict things to little more than 140, but then the innings exploded. Bush batsman Bunney particularly smashed his way to 66 not out, mostly off the bowling of Kloss, Douse and Malcolm. Amazingly Hollybush scored 83 runs from the last 6 overs. The final score of 194 for 6 looked strong. There was an element of equality in that each of the six Wash bowlers took one wicket.

After a good tea the Washington batting was opened by Rory Guy (49) and Tom Allott. Unfortunately Allott was bowled first ball in the 2nd over. Paul Anarich came in and hit a couple of good shots before he was bowled, however the Wash were going well at 52 for 2 after 10 overs. Debutant Nick Goldreich looked good and confident, hitting 4 boundaries before he unfortunately suffered an Achilles injury and had to retire hurt – word is he needs an operation and will be out for some time. Get well soon Nick.

Pete Demetri (16) came to the crease and helped to take the score forward steadily into 3 figures in the 20th over. Rory Guy at the other end was playing a most mature innings, but unfortunately perished on 49, bowled. At this point 90 runs were needed from 15 overs, not an unachievable target. However the Wash innings then collapsed, not untypically in recent years! Part of the reason though was that the Bush brought on a couple of accurate medium pace bowlers who had been held back. 5 wickets fell for 6 runs in 8 overs and the game was effectively over as a competition. Gary Malcolm (9) and David Gluckman (0*) pushed the score up a little, Malcolm hitting a couple of trademark 4s through square leg, but the innings closed in the 30th over and Hollybush had won by 61 runs.

Skipper Kloss said after the game “Well done to everyone today, we definitely tried our best. Unfortunately their batsmen got away from us in the last few overs, and the score proved too much. Tom bowled really well and Rory got close to a 50, but it was also really good to see debutants Chris and Nick both have good games. Hope to see them on the field again soon.”

Man of the match: jointly Rory Guy for 49 and Tom Allott for a great spell of bowling – Rory would have got it if he had scored one more run, and Tom if he had scored any at all!!

Packing the kit: A couple of goldens to choose from…
