Saturday 25th June 2011 vs Petts Wood Tudor C.C.

Tight Bowling Wins the Day

Petts Wood Tudor C.C. 162 for 5 declared
Washington C.C. 166 for 7

Brian White reporting.

The Wash arrived at Petts Wood Tudor coming off the back of losses at both UCS Old Boys & Northfields in their previous 2 games.

The players however were in high spirits, and stand in ‘toss skipper’ Ash Cruickshank duly got proceedings off to a positive start by calling tales and winning the toss, and then deciding to unleash the pace trio that is Stuart Marsh, Peter Kloss and a somewhat hungover & late for the game Sammy Clarke on the unsuspecting Petts Wood batsman.

Skipper for the day Peter Kloss duly rounded the troops before play and issued a rallying cry, reminding the Wash of the great players who had played for the Wash in years gone by, and how only a victory would suffice on the day.
His inspirational words duly struck a nerve, and Stuart Marsh responded by clean bowling the Petts Wood opening pair before the opposition had even reached 20.

Clarke and Kloss then toiled away and both bowled excellent line and length to restrict the run rate to under 3 runs an over.
Marsh came back and picked up another wicket to take his tally to 3 for the day – though he is probably still having nightmares of his final over in which 2 balls had to be replaced after being dispatched for massive sixes (both 6’s landing in neighbouring Kent), as well as 2 wells struck one bounce 4’s.
A change in bowling was needed, and cometh the hour, cometh the man from down under. No – not George Hope……. but Ash Cruickshank.
Ash duly measured his bowling run just the way he remembered it from his school days all those years ago and trundled in to clean bowl the dangerous Petts Wood batsman ‘Dave O’ (of no fixed abode) with his very first ball!
Ash proved an inspirational change and wasted no time getting stuck into the Petts Wood batsman with his military medium in-duckers and occasional wides.

The Wash bowlers were well supported in the field - particularly by Damien Bastick and Matt Cragoe who both took excellent catches at crucial times in the Petts Wood innings.

Pett’s Wood had reached 162-5 at tea, and then duly declared leaving the Wash to score 163 in roughly 36 overs.

The Wash opening pair of Nick Bunney and Tony ‘Kiwi’ Harris started off brightly wasting no time getting the Wash off on their way to the 163 target. Both batsman got starts (13 & 25) before getting out.
Mike Turner then showed promise before getting out cheaply.
Brian White and Matt Cragoe then steadied the ship and added 61 to take the Wash to within smell of victory.
After cruising to 57 Brian White lost his head and got out, and a couple more wickets fell cheaply causing panic in the Wash dressing room.
The Wash needed someone to step and be counted, and for the second time on the day Ash delivered, scoring an impromptu 32 off 21 balls to get the Wash to within 7 of the target before also losing his head and getting himself out.

It was then fitting that after his rallying call to arms at the start of the day, that Skipper Kloss sealed victory by hitting the winning runs for the Wash, on a glorious day for Cricket in South East London.
