Sunday 28th August 2011 vs Ebury Strollers C.C.

Big Innings by Gallant Hill Not Enough

Ebury Strollers C.C. 275 for 6 (40 overs)
Washington C.C. 235 all out (40 overs)

Peter Kloss reporting.

Wash suffered another loss on Sunday against Ebury in Chesham.

There were 2 points of farce at the start and end of the game. The groundsman insisted that the game be moved to a different pitch (the one designated) after the first 2 overs, and the game was concluded in almost total darkness at 8.20pm after a rather late start (2.20pm) and the home side's insistence that the game be a full 40 overs ensured the Wash would run out of light when they batted.

However neither of these were excuses for Wash's loss. That was down to dropped catches in the deep, and the inability of any batsman to stay with Shawn Hill long enough to maintain the 7+ an over run rate required.

Skipper Aff Naseem lost the toss and Ebury chose to bat on a good pitch (both pitches!). Ebury's opener, Hussain scored an unbeaten 164, despite the Wash being convinced they had him LBW early on and then 2 elders of the team (Kloss and Cragoe) dropping catches from Hussain near the boundary mid-innings.

Replying to Ebury's big total of 275 Shawn Hill was imperious as he smashed the bowling to all parts. His innings included 24 4s and 5 6s. Hill has missed a few games with a shoulder injury so it was a relief for the other Wash players to see him return to the form of the season's opening game when he hit 190 against Barnes. It seemed impossible for him to get out, but somehow he was caught in the deep in the last 5 overs when it was pretty impossible for anyone to see the ball!

Only two other batsmen hung around to provide Hill with significant support and both contributed to 50 partnerships, although their runs were in the minority. Sam Clark hit 20 and Brian White 19. Overall this was not a great batting display (apart from Hill of course), too many batsmen getting out to silly shots and/or not playing forward as the pitch conditions really demanded.

Man of the Match: Shawn Hill

Packing the kit: Kloss who had a pretty dismal game overall - had he caught Hussain in the 70s then the result would probably have been different...
