Washington C.C. | 84 all out | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
'Scoop' Cragoe reporting Washington crashed to a fifth consecutive defeat on Saturday. Essex outfit Cassowaries racked up 204 in their alloted 40 overs; Wash submitted for just 84 in reply. Cassowaries batted first and a tight opening spell from skipper Toby Mariner (1-16), ensured Wash got off to a competitive start. When Ben Ferguson (1-24) picked up the wicket of the dangerous opener Afcaan (45) just before drinks, Wash looked to be well in the hunt. However, though Wash continued to bowl some decent spells, with Stuart Marsh picking up 4-68, the home side found runs easier to come by in the closing stages. Luke Mitchell (1-26) picked up a useful wicket, and the skipper also tried Will McDonagh (0-27), Rory Guy (0-15) and Stephen Coyle (0-15) as he sought to stem the flow of runs. But Cassowaries - helped by a generous 37 extras - finished on 204. The wicket was not especially spiteful, and Washington approached their target with cautious optimism. However, things quickly went wrong. Akshay Pota (0) fell in the second over, and Mike Turner (6) followed soon after. Ferguson (10) and Matt Cheviott (9) steadied the ship briefly before being winkled out bowled and lbw in the space of 6 balls. Gary Malcolm (7), promoted to 6 in the order after several excellent performances with the bat in recent weeks, flourished briefly but was also bowled. Half the side were back in the hutch with jsust 45 on the board. There followed the partnership of the match as Guy (25) and Coyle (16) batted with sensible aggression and pushed the Wash up to 78-5 at drinks. However, immediately after the resumption, Coyle was bowled, and then McDonagh (0), Marsh (0) and Guy followed in quick succession. The skipper blazed a few shots hither and yon, but the end was not long delayed, Mitchell (0) being caught and bowled off the second ball of the 24th over. So the Wash crash to a fifth consecutive defeat in this strange summer-like spring. As Mariner said after the game, "Things can only get better". MoM: Stuart Marsh for fine bowling Kit: Cheviot for arriving late after 20 overs
