Closer than it looks

Yarl C.C. 144 all out (29.3 overs)
Washington C.C. 150 for 6 (28.4 overs)

Peter Kloss reporting

On the evidence of the statistics this game looks like a straightforward victory for Washington. However this was not quite the case as with the Wash innings at 97 for 6, still needing 48 more for victory, the game was in the balance. The cool heads and accomplished batting of Rob Tidey (32*) and Shawn Hill (33*) ensured that no more wickets fell and Washington achieved their target with more than 6 overs remaining.

Earlier the Wash had restricted Yarl to 144 and, more than that, had bowled them all out.  In the first 10 overs it was again Tidey (2-25) and Hill (2-17) who shone, taking Yarl to 51 for 4. The upper order batsmen did not help themselves by unwisely playing across the line frequently. Clinton Dugmore (3-11) had most success with the ball and bowled a very lively spell, exploiting the very variable bounce evident at one end on this green wicket. Some balls would rise alarmingly from a length, sometimes unplayable, whereas others would keep low.

Mark Cumming (2-11) chipped in with a couple of wickets to finish the innings off. If it wasn’t for a 7th wicket partnership of 52 the Yarl total would have been much lower. Most of these runs came from the bowling of Luke Mitchell (1-26) and David Gluckman (0-25).

Following a tea including tuna mayonnaise sandwiches, but spiced with green chillis (!!), the Wash started brightly with Mark Cumming (21) and Steve Brown (12) putting on a partnership of 40 in 8 overs. However wickets then fell regularly as Peter Kloss (0), debutant Nick Harthan (4), Pete Demetri (18) and Nick Bunney (6) all departed relatively cheaply. All batsmen found the variable bounce difficult with the opening bowler Vimalraj (3-28) particularly profiting. When Tidey and Hill came together 48 more were needed from 13 overs. The run rate required wasn’t the issue – not losing wickets on the difficult pitch was, and Rob and Shawn were more than up to the task.

Man of the match: has to be joint between Rob Tidey and Shawn Hill who found partnerships with both ball and bat

Packing the kit: Pete Demetri, for dropping a very straightforward catch at point...
