Washington Cricket Club - 40th Anniversary Year

The Wash were soundly beaten on Saturday against Palmers Green side Mayfield.

Washington welcomed back lost son Tony Burt from New Zealand for a one-off guest appearance. Unfortunately his presence did not seem to inspire the team, and they slumped to the second lowest score of the season (only by 1 run).

Wash bowled 48 overs at Mayfield, Sandeep (3-32) and Sam Clark (2-35) proving the most successful. There was also a solid performance from David Gluckman, now in his 71st year (0-50 from 7 overs). The key batsman for Mayfield was Swann who played a rather fortunate innings, survivng several chances to reach 104.

When Wash batted there was little to celebrate as the side quickly slumped to 27 for 5 and 38 for 8. Only Sandeep (15) and Shawn Hill (37) got into double figures. Burt scored 9. The judgement was that most guys played rash shots to get themselves out, however Aff Naseem, returning from a knee operation, got a snorter of a rising ball and was caught.

At least the Wash were able to push the game well into the final 20 overs, no. 11 Gluckman providing dogged resistance over a dozen overs for his 2 runs.
