Sunday 29th July 2007 vs Graces C.C.

Team Washington back on track

Washington C.C. 195 for 7 (40 overs)
Graces C.C. 120 all out (31.3 overs)

Washington got back to winning ways on Sunday with a fine all round team performance against Graces CC.  Having posted a total of 195 in difficult batting conditions, they bowled out their hosts for just 120, running out victors by 75 runs.

‘It was nice to win today after a couple of defeats’, beamed happy skipper Shawn Hill:  ‘that was just what the doctor ordered!’

Graces won the toss and inserted Wash on a very difficult wicket.  For the first twenty overs the ball seamed and bounced as the sun got to work on a surface drenched by overnight rain.  Opening bowlers Shafiek (0-29) and Bielby (1-31) performed superbly and starved the Washington batsmen:  after 18 overs, Wash had managed just 49 runs, losing Pete Demetri (10) and Paul Irons (4) in the process.

It was only with the arrival of Tony Burt (58) that Wash broke the shackles. With a series of fine lofted drives, Burt reached a second consecutive 50 on this ground and with Matthew Cragoe (20) added 76 for the 3rd wicket.  Both batsmen fell with the score at 105, but the momentum was kept up first by Hill (24) – who announced his arrival by pulling three balls over square leg for 6! -   and then by Peter Kloss (48) who played some lovely shots and was unfortunate to be run out two short of a deserved half century.  Brad Hitchcock – ‘the man in form’ – chipped in with 12 not out, and Wash took tea with a feeling that they had made the best of some very awkward conditions.

When the Graces came to bat, they saw a bright start turn sour. Washington’s 18-year old opening bowling attack of Max Murrain (3-43) and Dominic Butcher (2-23) recovered from a slightly shaky start to demolish the top order. By the time they had finished their respective spells, the Graces' innings was in tatters at 60-5.

Tobe Mariner (2-33) and wily spinner Eric Stoughton (3-20) ensured there was no respite, and with the aid of some good catching from Hill, Irons and Murrain, and an immaculate performance behind the stumps from Hitchcock, they wrapped the game up with 7 overs to spare.

So:  the Graces' two victories over Washington last season were avenged;  Washington returned to winning ways; and the sun shone.  It was pretty much the perfect Sunday.

Washington:  Hill*, Hitchcock+, Demetri, Cragoe, Irons, Burt, Kloss, Mariner, Butcher, Murrain, Stoughton.
