Saturday 23rd June 2007 vs Rose and Crown C.C.

Soggy End to a Promising Day

Rose and Crown C.C. 120 for 1 (26 overs)
Washington C.C.

The club experienced yet another rained off game on Saturday. Including the complete abandonment the next day (vs. Northfields), seven games have now been abandoned due to rain this season, and it's not even July yet. In 2006 only four games were lost throughout the whole season. This is really a disappointing summer so far.

The day started full of promise for the Washington. Four players were making their debuts for the club and hopes were high to avenge the disappointing defeat to the Rose and Crown last year. The weather at 2pm was fair, warm and a little humid. However the forecast had always indicated the possibility of thundery showers.

Washington captain Peter Kloss won the toss and chose to bowl, reasoning that he would rather field with a dry ball should it rain, and that he would rather chase runs than defend them with a relatively inexperienced team.

Regulars Dominic Butcher (0-18) and Sandeep Kuckreja (0-16) opened the bowling. Butcher struggled to find his line but between the wides he did bowl some corkers and was a little unlucky not to break through with a wicket. Sandeep also was unlucky with the batsmen playing and missing a number of times and a mistimed drive just going over the head of Kloss at cover. It was evident that the ball was swinging and this was making it difficult to control the ball.

Peter Kloss (1-9 from 6 overs) came on first change and immediately achieved huge away swing, having to aim well outside leg stump for the ball to pass the off. Under these conditions the batsmen found it difficult to get bat on ball, although Kloss did pick up a wicket with a thick outside edge skied to cover.

The other bowlers used were James Self (0-32), Taran Persaud (0-21) and TJ O'Leary (0-21) who all bowled very competently. This was particularly pleasing for debutants Self and O'Leary whose performances promised much for the future. Both medium-pacers were difficult to play when they hit the right length. Manish Arneja was about to come on for his first bowl for the club when the rain started shortly after 4pm.

The rain was light to begin with but soon thunder was heard and the heavens opened. The teams sheltered from the heavy rain under a tree but soon ran for cover in the changing rooms where tea was taken. 45 minutes later the rain eased but the square was partially under water and it was obvious to everyone that no further cricket was possible and the match was abandoned.

Kloss commented "It was a shame we couldn't complete this game - the guys were playing well and there was a team spirit developing out there. I hope the new guys make themselves available again soon and we can give them a full outing with the Wash".
