Peter Kloss Reporting

Considering how good results have been this season, Washington cricket club had a poor weekend last week. In two games which were remarkably similar in flow, the Wash escaped with a draw on Saturday and were roundly beaten on Sunday. In both games the Washington captain (Peter Kloss on Saturday; Justin Gurney on Sunday) won the toss and chose to bowl. The oppositions batted well, but never really got on top of the bowling, only Wilson of Tilford (72) passing 50. However both totals turned out to be very competitive. Washington used 17 bowlers in all across the two games, some more successful than others. Dave Mutton (2-10) and Max Murrain (2-19) were the best on a difficult, damp and windy day at Haste Hill; Nick Tidey (3-19) and Justin Gurney (3-22) were the pick on a dry but bouncy track at Tilford.

The other bowlers used on Saturday were Dominic Butcher (1-25), Peter Kloss (0-16), Eric Stoughton (2-39), Nigel Bakhai (0-23), Andy Murrain (0-19) and Russell Pendry (1-20) who bowled a beauty to bowl one batsman behind his legs. The wind was so strong that Stoughton deceived the batsmen more through swing in the air than spin off the pitch and the medium pacers bowled quite a number of true ‘banana’ balls which contributed to a high wides total of 24 in the innings. Hope behind the stumps also found conditions difficult and a number of byes were conceded. The Haste Hill total would have been restricted further were if not for four dropped catches in and around the slips, Paul Irons unusually being a significant culprit in this respect.

On Sunday there were also wickets for Peter Kloss (1-32),  Richard Jones (1-29) and Shawn Hill (2-8). Tony Burt (0-9), Robert Tidey (0-13), Grattan McCoach (0-17) and David Gluckman (0-20) made up the bowling compliment. McCoach particularly bowled really well left arm round the wicket, exploiting the bounce in the wicket and was unlucky not to get on the scorecard. Nick Tidey in bowling the Tilford no. 10 achieved every pace bowlers dream and broke a bail in two – indeed he did bowl with some venom and was certainly the fastest bowler on show on Sunday. Gurney turned the ball significantly with his leg spin, but it was the extra bounce which got the batsman, a number of chances going to gully where Hill took one excellent catch.

At tea on both days the Washington captains felt they were in control, having confidence in (at least on paper) strong batting line-ups.

In Saturday’s game Wash were going along nicely at 68 for 2, with George Hope (46) and Andy Murrain (23) building a partnership. Both struck a number of boundaries, Hope in more orthodox aggressive style than the swashbuckling Murrain. Andy Murrain, father of the bowler Max better known to most club members, was playing his first game for over 20 years since being at school and this made his performance all the more excellent. However these two bats then fell and although there was some dogged resistance from Max Murrain (15) and Dave Mutton (10), the batting more or less collapsed and it looked like Haste Hill had done enough to win. But Peter Kloss (4*) and Max Murrain, and then Eric Stoughton (0*) were able to block out the final 8 overs and deny the disappointed Haste Hill. There was a remarkable end to the game when, with one wicket required to win on the very last delivery of the match, the ball was blocked by Stoughton, spun back, hit the base of off stump, but did not dislodge the bails. Washington were mightily relieved.

On Sunday again Washington started with some confidence, Rob Tidey and Aff Naseem (both 12) taking the score to 24 for 0 from seven overs. However then there was a major collapse and nine overs later Washington found themselves 38 for 6. Justin Gurney and Richard Jones (both 20) hung around and hit a few defiant big shots, but both were then dismissed by Tilford’s Thompson (4-21). Knott (2-10 from 8 overs) also turned in a great performance. Washington were embarrassed to have been dismissed for their lowest score of the season (92) and Tilford had won with a comfortable nine overs still remaining to be bowled.

It was certainly a disappointing batting performance by Washington across the weekend. Eight of the Washington’s top 12 batsmen this season amassed only 87 runs between them, and Hope scored more than half of these.

Club Captain Justin Gurney said after Sunday’s game “it’s a funny game cricket. When the batsmen are on form you’re almost invincible as a team, but it only takes 3 or 4 of them to get out cheaply and suddenly you look pretty foolish. We’ll have to try harder next week.”. Peter Kloss was forced to agree, Saturday’s experience being very similar.
