Saturday 19th August 2006 vs Great Gaddesden C.C.

Great Gaddesden start Washed away

Great Gaddesden C.C. 77-0 (15 overs)
Washington C.C.

There was a frustrating day for 11 Washington players on Saturday as they made the trip north to rural Hertfordshire, played for an hour in bright conditions, but then had the game abandoned as the heavens opened.

In truth the game was always somewhat in doubt as there had been localised rain showers all week prior to Saturday, and as the team drove through Hemel Hempstead at 1pm on their way to the ground there was a very heavy shower causing some road flooding. However on arrival at Gaddesden, only 5 miles further north, the pitch was reasonably dry and playable.

In the cricket which was possible Washington did not have a great day. Dominic Butcher (0-27) opened the bowling and was unfortunate not to take a wicket with his third ball. Russell Pendry dropped a regulation chance at first slip. From the other end Peter Kloss (0-16), back from a shoulder injury, bowled a tight spell and was unlucky not to take wickets as Fendick played and missed on several occasions and also almost played on a couple of times. Washington paid for their dropped catch as Cheesman snr (53*) went on to score a half century in quick fashion to push Great Gaddesden's score to 77 for no wicket after 15 overs. Jones (0-33) bowled four expensive overs and skipper Kloss had turned to spinner Eric Stoughton (0-6) to slow the pace of the ball down.

At just after 3pm the clouds gathered and the rain began. It was quite light at first and the teams hoped to resume, but then it became heavy and persistent, and puddles began to appear on the pitch. By the time the teams took an early tea at 4.15 it was clear there would be no further play that day.

The Washington tucked into their sandwiches and cake with unusual relish, knowing that they would not have to carry the extra stomach weight back onto the field. After a drink with the opposition, the Wash players returned to the Washington for an earlier than usual session.
