For a change a foray into declaration cricket, with the home side winning the toss and opting to bat in superb conditions. Form bowler Peter Kloss started very well, getting both lift and swing, and Highgate crawled to 53-4 by the 20th over. Skipper Holly was the only home batter to make his mark and he managed to pilot his lower order to a reasonable 202-8 after 52 overs. Faisal and Singh, each with 28, helped him achieve that total. Wash skipper Justin Gurney (3-32) found an excellent rhythm with his leg spin and he, Kloss (3-16) and Chris Davis (2-48) shared the wickets. Kiwi Tony Harris starred in the field with some brilliant work in the covers. With about 40 overs available to chase the total, Wash opened with Paul Irons and Dale Bracegirdle, who added 158 for the first wicket in 21 overs. Irons continued his rampant form this season with a powerful 90 in 63 balls (8 fours/5 sixes), while Bracegirdle was happy to play second fiddle and scored a cultured 69 not out (9 fours) to take the Wash to an easy victory with 13 overs to spare. Kiwi Harris (13 not out) helped add the 46 required for victory. The ground was perfect and the weather superb and Highgate have kindly invited Wash back next year. We can expect somewhat tougher opposition.
