Sunday 1st August 2004 vs Northfields C.C.

WASH SECURE 3 WICKET VICTORY

Northfields C.C. 149
Washington C.C. 150-7

On a sensational summers afternoon the Wash edged out Northfields CC in a tightly fought encounter in West London, writes Dennis Edwards. Having lost the toss the Wash had first use of an undulating track, which offered particularly good bounce from the southern end, which was to keep Roche on his toes behind the pegs for the afternoon.

Kennedy (1/14) with the new cherry was steaming in and making life very uncomfortable for the batsmen from the southern end with genuine pace and bounce, and was unlucky not to have claimed more scalps. Sharing the new ball, Edwards (1/15) snared the initial breakthrough caught well by Phelan in the covers. This brought Jayasinghen to the crease who made the most of his early chance to anchor the innings and compile a well-batted 71.

At 2 for a 100 odd the Wash were staring down the barrel of 200 plus from the 40 overs before Jones (1/26) bowling well in tandem with Kennedy then Phelan (0/29) deservedly trapped one in front. It was the sniff the Wash needed and when Malcolm (3/29) had Jayasinghen caught the Wash were back in the hunt.

The spinners then destroyed the lower Northfeilds batting order with Gurney (2/24) and Malcolm bowling accurately and taking a constant stream of wickets between them. All that was then required was the final two wickets. The skipper then threw the ball to Heffernan in his first outing for the Wash who proceeded to close the innings with (2/0) off only four balls including a wicket off his first delivery.

Set a target of 150 the Wash opened up with Demetri (60) and Jones (6) who between them got things away nicely with Demetri particularly in punishing form with his stylish fifty. Jones exit brought Hitchcock (24) to the crease who also batted well to share a fruitful partnership with Demetri to get the Wash within 50 odd of victory.

When Hitchcock departed Heffernan (0) followed next ball to have Burton (5) see off the hat trick and combine with Edwards (14) to steady the innings. With victory in sight a mini collapse saw Burton, Edwards and Roche (0) return to the pavilion to give Northfields a faint chance of nicking it.

This was not entertained by Phelan (17 not out) and Kennedy (6 not out) as they closed out the victory, which left skipper Gurney to state “Everyone made a contribution for a good win which was a fitting way to send Dennis back to Oz.”
