Grace’s            144

Washington            145-5

Washington’s sequence of three draws came to a happy termination on Sunday as Gurney’s men recorded a five-wicket victory over Grace’s at North Middlesex.

The skipper himself led the way with a stunning exhibition of leg-spin bowling in which he picked up 4-14;  then Demetri thrashed a quick-fire 50 to put the result beyond doubt.

Grace’s batted first on a dry pitch on which the ball had a tendency to keep low.  Micky Kennedy made an almost immediate breakthrough, Donald Campbell clinging on to a stinger in the slips to dismiss FitzHarris, but Dean Stockinger (39), batting with a broken finger, then led a recovery, adding 48 for the second wicket with Rishafi (9).

However, the injured opener’s vigil came to an end when he flirted with Eric Stoughton’s away swinger and was caught at the wicket by John Roche, and thereafter, Wash had it pretty much their own way.  Richard Jones bowled an impressive spell from the Calthorpe end, picking up 2-19, Shaun Phelan got a first wicket for the Wash, and the skipper bowled his best spell of the season, even ending the innings of visiting skipper Noddy Shofiq for a stylish 24.

It all left wash facing a fairly comfortable target, and openers Pete Demtri and Donald Campbell set off in pursuit at a steady 5 an over.  Campbell was caught behind cutting, but Demetri was in awesome form, driving, pulling and nurdling anything and everything as he raced to 50:  when he finally skied a catch to cover with 65 against his name, the match was effectively already won.

Grace’s did enjoy some late successes.  The match tightened up when Shofiq brought himself on, and Wash had to fight hard for their runs.  Craig Stachurski (35), however, kept his head and played some glorious shots to keep the scoreboard ticking over.

There were other successes for the visitors: Matthew Cragoe (12) was unfortunate to be trapped out of his ground when a Stachurski drive deflected off the bowlers hands onto the stumps; Agar Burton (4) fell lbw; and Stachurski himself succumbed before the end.

However, sixth wicket pair, Kennedy (7) and Roche (4) saw the ship safely home, and brought Wash back to winning ways.

Washington:  Gurney (c), Roche (+), Demetri, Campbell, Cragoe, Stachurski, Burton, Kennedy, Phelan, Jones, Stoughton.

Man of the Match: Gurney:  4 wickets and a decent catch

Packing the Kit:  Shaun Phelan - late arrival!
