Saturday 6th September 2003 vs Elthorne Park C.C.

ANTIPODEAN ASSULT SEES WASH ROLL ELTHORNE

Elthorne Park C.C. 116-9
Washington C.C. 117-5

A Wash team full of Aussies, Kiwis, Boks (except for Taran Presued who was flying the Ghanaian flag) travelled to Perivale on Saturday to take on Elthorne Park. And the side got Dale Bracegirdle’s new skippering career off to a winning start with a convincing 5 wicket win over their ten-man opponents.

Elthorne won the toss and decided to bat on a dry pitch. Wash opening pair Mick Kennedy (0-17) and Dan Barrett (1-10) bowled superbly and kept things very tight. The Elthorne top order had to bat conservatively just to survive and the run rate stayed well below three an over as a consequence. This display of bowling from both openers Kennedy and Barrett (five overs each) finally forced the wicket of opener Peter for 9.

Gerry Croneen led the second-wicket recovery with a stalwart 26, and together with Andy Legg (37) had taken the score to 75 before Washington enjoyed another success. This breakthrough, however, heralded a near-England quality collapse from the home side, as the rest of the team succumbed for the addition of only 40 runs, nobody reaching double figures.

Craig Stochurski bagged three scalps for 33 in a tight eight over spell, but the most devastating onslaught was by Bradden Legg who took a remarkable 3-10 in just 2 overs! With wickets too for new recruit Dave Hobern and skipper Bracegirdle, and some smart work behind the stumps from Alex Quin, it all added up to a good afternoon’s work in the field by the Wash.

Wash chased their target with vigour from the off, with Tony Harris (4), incapacitated by a pulled hamstring, and Quin scoring at six an over throughout. Quin picked up where he left off last week and racing to 23 before being caught, and Dennis Edwards (20) kept the score ticking along while Greg Skinner played an anchoring role at the other end.

Victory was secured with a pyrotechnic hitting display from Barrett , who smashed seven 4s and a 6 in reaching 38 not out on his first outing for the Wash.

So, just for once, a team full of Aussies and Kiwis managed to get a low target on English soil, and Wash entered the final month of this long hot summer with yet another win.
