Saturday 17th August 2002 vs Mayfield C.C.

White hot White burns bright for Wash

Washington C.C. 209-5
Mayfield C.C. 144-5

Washington’s run-glutted summer continued at the weekend when the Saturdays piled up another big total – this time against Mayfield. At the heart of their two hundred run tally stood a major innings from Brian White, a scintillating century that impressed skipper David Gluckman: ‘we’ve got a great team this year’, he said, ‘but Brian’s innings was among the best of the season and shows he’s right up there with the best of them. It was a joy to watch.’

It certainly was – if your hat sported the gold and green favours of the Washington. It didn’t look quite so much fun from the Mayfield perspective, especially as they had won the toss, and, like the good hosts they are, offered Washington first bat.

Washington, being equally good guests, duly took advantage: White piled up 107, and Mark Wittet (35) recorded yet another strong middle order performance to confirm the good impression he’s made since joining the side.

Gluckman declared at tea, leaving Mayfield a steep target of 210 for victory. The home side came out with gun’s blazing but lost quick wickets as opening pair Mark Evans (2-26) and veteran seamer Terry Tidey (3-28) chipped away the top half of the batting order.

At some point, however, Mayfield called off the chase and settled for the draw: on a true pitch, there was little Wash could do to force their opponents’ hand.

So the match ended in a tame draw, but with the memory of White’s century growing longer as the late evening shadows spread across Mayfield’s ground.
