Sunday 4th August 2002 vs Ploughmans C.C.

Honours even

Washington C.C. 188 for 9
Ploughmans C.C. 130 for 6

Washington played out a frustrating draw with West London outfit Ploughman's on Sunday. In a game affected by the rain, though not significantly delayed, Wash did well to post a total of 188. However, they left themselves too little time to bowl out their opponents and the match ended with honours even.

Washington had first bat on a very difficult surface, where the ball moved considerably and occasionally leapt off a good length. Batting was a hazardous affair, and all Washington's batsmen took the precaution of wearing helmets.

Wash lost Pete Demetri early on, but Dale Bracegirdle got his head down and compiled 27 before falling to a catch at the wicket. With his dismissal, the torch passed to Alan Moffat, who played brilliantly to notch up his first half century for two seasons – a fine 71. Paul Irons added a trademark 29, young Nick Tidey lashed a couple of late boundaries and Wash declared with 188-9 on the board after 47 overs.

Unfortunately, this left the Ploughmen with only 33 overs in which to get the runs. They set off at a cracking pace, ten runs coming off Gary Evans's first over. However, Evans's response was to take two quick wickets, and with leg-spinner Justin Gurney almost unplayable on the damp surface the Ploughmen decided that discretion was the better part of valour and shut up shop.

Skipper Dave Walker tried out a number of bowling options in an attempt to make significant inroads, and there were wickets for Bracegirdle, Demetri and Irons. However, the match ended in a very even draw.
