Southgate Adelaide C.C. 72 all out

Washington C.C 215 for 5 dec Southgate Adelaide C.C. 72 all out A bravura batting display by Steve Billows was the centre-piece of a comprehensive Washington victory on Sunday. Billows smashed 85 off just 55 balls, with two sixes and fifteen fours, as the Islington side posted a massive score of 215 before bowling out their opponents for just 72. It was a tough afternoon for Southgate Adelaide’s 2nd XI, who fielded a number of colts.
Having lost the toss, they watched as Washington’s batsmen exerted a stranglehold on the game. Paul Swords (17) and Nick Wickers (26) added 42 for the second wicket, and Walker (40) and Billows, 122 for the fourth. David Gluckman (11 not out) and Taran Persaud (3 not out) provided a final flurry, allowing Walker to declare at tea with 215 runs in the bank.

Southgate’s batsmen set about their task in good earnest, skipper Lebrooy (15) and impressive young keeper, Craig Lyte (11) adding 20 for the first wicket. The dismissal of the captain, however, to a well-judged Gary Evans catch, off the bowling of Jimmy Wood (3-18), was the beginning of the end for the home side.

Only M. Flack (20) got the measure of the Washington attack, in which change bowlers Evans (3-7) and McNellan(3-14) were outstanding.

Washington duly won by 143 runs, but Walker admitted afterwards: ‘It was a bit of a mismatch today, but it’s always interesting to check out the young boys coming through the ranks at a club like Southgate: they’re the future of cricket'.

'We could do with a few in our eleven!’, he added, smiling.
