Saturday 14th July 2001 vs Bourne End C.C.

Bourne End C.C. 196 for 5
Washington C.C. 173 for 9

Washington gained an honourable draw at Bourne End on Saturday. Having lost the toss, and seen the opposition rack up 196-5, they clung on, and had amassed a respectable 173-9 when stumps were drawn.

Washington's bowlers began well: Peter Kloss took his first wicket for the club, courtesy of a great catch at first slip by Dale Bracegirdle; with Terry Tidey and Paul Irons also firing on all cylinders from the other end, the home side were totering at 50-5.

But there the Washington superiority ended. Proctor and Barnes added 146 for the 6th wicket, the former registering an excellent 102 not out and Barnes 57, allowing Bourne End to declare shortly before tea.

Washington's reply started aggressively with Alan Moffat (20) and Bracegirdle (32) dealing almost exclusively in boundaries, helped by attacking fields and a fast outfield. The good work was continued by South African Phil Coleman, who scored an excellent 33.

A middle order collapse left Washington in real difficulties, however, and it tok a magnificent fight-back, led by Irons, to keep the visitors in the game. Ably assisted by Peter Kloss (11) and Terry Tidey (9), he steered Washington towards safety.

However, there were still 8 balls left when the 9th wicket fell. Bourne End, scenting victory, ringed the bat, which gave Irons the chance of a final flourish: 3 boundaries in the last six balls took his personal score to 41 not out and Washington to a respectable 173-9.

Later, skipper David Gluckman said: 'It was a great game that went to the wire, and though victory was denied, it was a brave fight back'.
