Washington escaped from Hertfordshire with their unbeaten Sunday record intact - but only just. Herts League side Cavendish Hatfield piled up 240 runs in just 34 overs on a blazingly hot afternoon, leaving Wash eight down, fifty runs shy of their tagret at the close. Wash were without key bowlers Minion, Evans, Wood and Gurney, but skipper Dave Walker identified the sun as the key to Washington's disappointing performance. 'It was very hot', he said, 'and I would certainly have batted first had I won the toss; sadly for us, I didn't and they did, so to speak'. Ironically, Washington began brightly, Alex McNellan grabbing two early wickets, but the arrival at the crease of Hatfield keeper Ian Cooper saw the home side turn up the heat. Cooper(104 not out) simply put the Wash attack through the mangle; in partnership with D. Hurst (37) and then skipper Richard Bridgeman(61), he hung Washington's attack out to dry. Late wickets for James Tapper(2-80) added some respectability, but Hatfield desclared at tea leaving Wash facing a total of 241 for victory. For at least part of the afternoon, an unlikely triumph was not beyond Washington. Paul Swords (65) and Steve Billows (52) added a majestic 117 for the second wicket, and entering the last twenty overs, Wash needed 120 runs with nine wickets standing. However, Hurst grabbed 5-23 in 7 crucial overs to cold-water Washington's hopes, and despite a breezy fifth wicket partnership of 28 between Alan Moffatt(24) and Johnny Roche(5), and a late flurry from the stylish Taran Persaud (6), the North London side were ultimately grateful for the draw.
