Sunday 11th June 2000 vs Pacific C.C.

Pacific C.C. 136 all out
Washington C.C. 139 for 5

Washington are this week celebrating a hard-fought win against Islington rivals Pacific at Alexandra Park on Sunday. Having bowled their guests out for 136, Wash reached their target with five wickets and two overs to spare.
Skipper Dave Walker was jubilant: 'The margin of five wickets is a bit deceptive: for most of the afternoon it was neck and neck. I thought Pacific bowled and fielded really well, and that we didn't play as well as we can. But we held our nerve and won out, so I'm pleased for the team.'

Both sides were without key players: Pacific felt the want of the Baglivi brothers, Dave Murray and Pete Atwood, whilst Washington were missing Pete Demetri, Grant Macdonald, Gary Evans and new fast-bowling sensation Rob Crossley. But when Walker won the toss he had no hesitation asking Pacific to bat.

The toss was won by Washington, and Richard Minion (1-20) and Jimmy Wood (3-9) quickly justified Walker's decision to bowl first. However, Pacific rallied. Craig Jones (25) and Jim Davies (28) played very well in difficult conditions and when Darryl Roberts whacked a quick 24, Pacific's total assumed significant proportions. But with wickets tumbling steadily, with Aussie leg-spinner Justin Gurney (4-41) and Terry Tidey (1-28) in the thick of the action, Wash were left with a reasonable target.

Washington's reply began slowly in the face of very accurate bowling from Mike Alexander (0-22) and Roberts (1-21). However, Wash's batsmen hung in there, Matthew Cragoe batting nearly two hours for 33.

There were moments of hope for Pacific, as when Peter Hollman (2-21) brought one back sharply to bowl the excellent Nick Wickers (20) and when Roberts held a fine catch to get rid of Denis Edwards (15), but Washington gradually closed in on their target, Walker hitting an aggressive 22, before falling to Nigel Wilkinson (1-25). However, Wash finished in style, with James Tapper (22 not out off 18 balls) and Gurney (17 not out off 8 balls, including an enormous six which scattered fielders on the adjoining pitch), wrapped things up.

Pacific's Peter Hollman was in philosophical mood after the game: 'I thought we made the most of our total: we bowled and fielded very well, and Craig Jones's work in the gully was probably worth another ten runs on its own. If a couple of close lbw decisions had gone our way, things might have been different, but overall I think the better team won on the day' .
