Washington put in a fine team performance to secure what, ultimately, was a comfortable victory on Sunday. Tight bowling and excellent ground fielding limited Rednecks to under a hundred, and a patient batting display saw Wash reach their target with just four wickets down. Skipper Dave Walker was a very happy man and said: ‘That was a good result on a pitch which offered the bowlers something throughout the match’. Walker had won the toss, and had no hesitation in asking the Rednecks to bat first on a very green wicket. Jimmy Wood (2-15) claimed a wicket with the very first ball of the match, and from this point on, Rednecks always struggled to build a defensible total. Paul Irons (0-18) bowled eight pacey overs, without much luck, and there were two wickets a-piece for James Tapper (2-28) and Gary Evans (2-19). Star of the bowling, however, was veteran Scot, Alex McNellan (4-12). He combined a teasing line with prodigious in-swing, a combination which left the Rednecks redfaced. It was only a solid seventh wicket stand between Barnard (17) and Clampton (22) that gave the total any respectability. With just 96 on the board, a routine victory for Wash seemed on the cards. Yet, when the Rednecks bowled, there was still plenty in the pitch, and the early loss of Grant MacDonald for 2 raised the home side’s spirits. However, Matthew Cragoe (31) added a measured 32 for the second wicket with Phil Coleman (10), and another 31 for the third with the stylish Steve Brown (15) to put Wash back on track. It fell to Walker (18 not out) to ensure there were no further upsets on the way to the finishing line, and Wash reached their target with two thunderous boundaries from the effervescent Johnny Roche to wrap up a comprehensive victory with 8 overs to spare.
