Saturday 4th August 2001 vs Arkley C.C.

Frustration

Arkley C.C. 175 for 8
Washington C.C. 77 for 3

Washington spent Saturday dodging the showers in their match at Arkley, but ultimately found the elements too strong a force and had to make do with a draw.

The home side batted first, and encountered Wash opening bowler Jimmy Wood in fine form: the fiery Scot ripped out the top 3 Arkley batsmen in a devastating 9 over spell: and with Terry Tidey (1-33) and Richard Minion (3-39) also in fine, penetrative form, Arkley were looking down the barrel with seven wickets down for just 81.

However a brave stand of 63 between Beaton (59 not out) and Jones (37) for the eighth wicket restored the home side’s pride, and they finally felt able to declare, having faced 48 overs, with 175 on the board. Wood picked up a late wicket to finish with 4-24.

The game had already been subject to one rain break, but the players emerged after tea, and, in between the showers, Pete Demetri (54) compiled yet another half century. However, more rain reduced the number of overs available to Wash to such an extent that with 77 on the board and another 99 needed from 9 overs, the skippers agreed to call it a day.

Skipper Dave Walker said later. ‘Very disappointed: I thought we had the men to do the job, but the weather made it impossible.’
