Washington chalked up an impressive victory on Sunday against useful West London outfit, Ploughmans. When the teams met earlier this season, a below-strength Washington side were left clinging on for the draw; this time around, a strong team made no mistake. Skipper Dave Walker was ecstatic: ‘I think I’m speaking for the whole team when I say how delighted I am with that result’, he beamed: ‘Ploughman’s are an excellent bowling side and to get the runs in the time we did was a magnificent effort.’ It was a happy end to an altogether satisfactory day for the skipper, who won the toss and asked the visitors to bat first. Ben Williamson (19) and stylish Aussie Greg Smith (38) put on 53 for the first wicket, but then James Wood (3-54) and Richard Minion (4-19), bowling with real fire from a shorted run up, struck. The Ploughmen slumped to 61-6, as Wash hung on to their catches – Alan Moffat taking a blinder behind the stumps. With Justin Gurney (2-36) quickly finding his stride, it seemed Wash would wrap up the rest quickly. However, Ploughman skipper Dyll Davies (27) steadied his team and orchestrated a valiant rearguard effort: 61-6 became 152-9 as the Ploughmen batted on past the usual time for tea. The Ploughmen had batted for 52 overs; Washington were left with a maximum of 38: they got home in 37. Star of the show, as so often, was Pete Demetri. Washington’s Aussie hero scored 46 before being trapped lbw, adding 77 for the first wicket with Matthew Cragoe (16). It was a sound platform, and Walker (22) and Moffat (33) duly climbed into the bowling, adding a further 64 for the third wicket. The return of opening bowlers Smith and Matt Ridgeway threatened to rein Washington in at the close, but a little hectic running from Brendan Edwards(6 not) and Gurney (1 not) and it was all over – with six balls to spare.
