Washington suffered another heavy defeat on Sunday at the hands of Hendon outfit, Old Reptilians. Despite having won the toss and elected to bat, the Wash were skittled out for just 85, a target their opponents overhauled for the loss of only four wickets. But skipper Dave Walker wasn't blaming his players: 'the pitch was a disgrace', he said: 'the bounce was uneven and dangerous, especially in the first dozen overs when the ball was new and hard. By the time it calmed down, we'd lost half our team, and there was no way back after that.' The pitch was indeed a bad one. The early batsmen needed little persuading to don protective helmets, many, like Pete Demetri and Walker himself, doing so for the first time. Nevertheless, the Reptilians made the most of the situation and clung on to some great catches in the slips, where four of the first five Washington batsmen perished. The only performances of note with the bat came from Walker, who played a captain's innings of 24, discarding his hard-hat as the pitch flattened out later in the innings, and James Tapper. Tapper, making a welcome reappearance in Wash colours, hit a beefy 16, and it was only the 27 these two added for the 7th wicket that gave the Wash total any vestige of respectability. When Reptilians batted, the pitch had lost much of its spite, but their batsmen attacked the total from the first ball. Early breakthroughs might have given Wash a chance, but catches went down and they were unable to build any concerted pressure on the home side. There were wickets for all the bowlers - Jimmy Wood grabbed 1-20, Terry Tidey 1-12, Tapper, 1-35 and Justin Gurney 1-8 - but there was also an amazing 42 off just 14 balls for Reptilians no 6 Izrah, and that sealed Washington's fate. The last word on the game, however, after a sporting weekend which belonged to Australia around the world, should surely go to washington's own Aussie leg-spinner, Gurney: 'their catching was out of this world and their batting was ruthless: that's how you win cricket matches'. England take note!
