Washington crashed to a second defeat on Sunday when they were trounced by Hampshire side Vagabonds. Fine batting from the home side allowed them to declare on 230-7, and then Wash were hurried out for just 121. The 109 run margin of defeat was as comprehensive as the 8-wicket the side suffered the previous day in Mayfield. The early signs did not augur well for the Wash. Jimmy Wood consistently beat the bat with his pacey away-swing but failed to find an edge, and Terry Tidey limped out of the attack after just five wicketless overs. Meanwhile the Munro brothers, opening for Vagabonds, attacked from the start, plundering the Washington attack for 45 and 36 respectively; even when they were removed, falling victims to their own over-ambition, a succession of Vagabonds batsmen came in and made hay on the friendly wicket. Best of the lot was skipper M. Garton who stroked an elegant 55 not out. Pick of the Washington’s attack were Wood (3-55) and Aussie spinner Dale Bracegirdle (3-47), and there was a wicket too for Kit Cooper (1-61). On a good pitch, 230 was not unattainable, and Washington went about their task as if they meant business. 24 came from the first 5 overs, but the loss of Pete Demetri for 9 and skipper Dave Walker (15) took the wind out of Washington’s balloon. Some hefty clubbing from Aussie Grant MacDonald gave the visitors a glimmer of hope, but when he was out for a top-scoring 38, the innings ran out of steam. Despite the best efforts of David Gluckman (14) and John Roche (18 not out), it was the Vagabonds who emerged victorious. For skipper Dave Walker, however, there was some consolation: ‘there’s always next Sunday’, he said.
