Saturday 9th June 2001 vs Ploughmans C.C.

Resolute Defiance

Ploughmans C.C. 171 for 7
Washington C.C. 120 for 6

A resolute rearguard action from David Gluckman 38) and skipper Dave Walker(28 not out) saved Washington’s bacon on Saturday. West London outfit Ploughman’s tucked in and consumed half the visitors’ team for just 37 before the two Davids spoiled the feast.

It was a defiant end to a trying afternoon for Washington. In damp conditions, aggravated by the chilly breeze whipping across the ground, Walker had elected to bowl first on winning the toss.

Due to the inexperience of the side, most of the bowling fell to Terry Tidey and James Wood. Tidey bowled 21 overs, troubling all the batsmen and taking four wickets for 66, an incredible effort in the cirumstances; Wood, bowling wind-assisted, grabbed 3-87 in 19. Promising young London schools cricketer, Nick Tidey (0-14), chipped in with three fiery overs.

For all their efforts, Ploughman’s cruised along at four runs an over, profiting from some profligate Wasington fielding. Matt Ridgeway scored an impressively fluent 35, while Feaney added a patient 44. The Ploughman’s skipper called in his team at tea with a challenging 171 on the board, leaving Wash with plenty to do.

Their reply did not begin well. Lonnen ploughed a furrow through the top order, taking the wickets of Grant Macdonald (4), David Eastman (2) and Alan Moffat (0) in quick succession to leave Wash reeling at 21-3. The further loss of Rod Smith (1) and Matthew Cragoe (21) seemed to presage an early end to proceedings. However Gluckman and Walker battled through the remainder of the innings, adding 83 priceless runs, and defying the ring of Plough-boys camped around the bat for the final ten overs as the home team vainly sought a decisive breakthrough.

Would another wicket have cost Washington the match? Skipper Walker was cautious: ‘It would certainly been interesting: we had young Robert Tidey, a Middlesex colt, coming in next: he reckons he might have won it for us!’ So said the skipper. Washington play a home fixture against Ploughman’s on 15 July and will hope that, on their own field, they can make life a little harder for the Ploughmen.
