Washington romped to an easy victory in their first game of the season against Amersham outfit White Lions on Sunday. The Lions were bowed out for just 52; Washington knocked them off in just over ten overs. 'Cricket's an easy game, isn't it?' joked Wash skipper Dave Walker afterwards. 'But seriously, I was a bit dissappointed. We've got some tough fixtures ahead and I wanted all the bowlers to have long spells, and the batsmen to get some time at the middle. But a win is a win'.
Walker can take comfort from the form of the Washington players who did get into the game. The bowlers all looked sharp. Jimmy Wood (3-18) was the pick, but Gary Evans (2-11), James Tapper (1-9) and Alex McNellan (1-1) all looked in good form, and new Australian leg-spinner Justin Gurney turned in figures of 2-8 on his debut. Wood, Gurney and David Gluckman all took good catches in the deep.
The bulk of the runs in Wahington's reply, meanwhile, came from the bat of the impressive Niuck Wickers (30 not out), who shared in a stand of 40 with opener Matthew Cragoe (16).
A good day for the Wash then, but not so for the Lions. As the captain said after the match: 'that was officially humiliating'.
