A Rusty Win to Start the Season

Pimlico Strollers C.C. 72 all out (19.3 overs)
Washington C.C. 76 for 5 (14.2 overs)

Shawn Hill reporting.

There was some rusty cricket this weekend, especially in the batting department and it seems like the bowlers benefited more than the batsmen from the winter nets. I put it down to an early season pitch.

The Wash fielded first against Pimlico Strollers on sunday on what can only be described as full on jumper weather. Mariner (aka skippy) opened and the first over saw a 4 through gully and then a blinder (if I say so myself) of a catch taken at 4th slip by the 2nd slip who was standing at 3rd slip. My official response is that I saw it and caught it, but might have lost my good looks if I didn't. Wickets feel regularly with Toby bagging 4 in his first spell of the season and some fine bowling by Mitchell saw a catch dropped before bowling that unplayable delivery that every batsman dreads. A perfect forward defence played on the right line to a ball swinging in to leg stump but the ball kissed the pitch, nipped away past the shoulder of the bat and caught the top of off. Pendry replaced Mitchell, who bagged a brace courtesy of a catch by Fogs (he also claims to have had it under control all the way from the bat), and bowled in tandem with debutant Alex Evans. One of the oppo opening bats had seen off the fiery opening bowlers and was set to face Russ' first ball which was a long hop that was well defended. Second ball Russ, he claims, decided to toss one up and I quote (sort of) "above the sight screen and a little fuller to utilise the breeze to to allow the ball to drift and then hit the pitch to rip away with all the spin I put on it." cue batsman's eyes lighting up, missing the ball and getting castled! Pendry is back! End score for the oppo was 72 all out, Pendry having claimed another scalp.

First innings over, too soon for tea, so the wash batted. Kevin Read, another debutant opened with Clarke and both played some shots off the middle of the bat that didn't get many runs and soon the Wash were reduced to about 12 for 3. A very shaky start. Hilly came in and soon a few more wickets fell and the Wash wash teetering on 30 odd for 5 and not even half way!! A steady Fogs at one end defending the good ones and playing low risk cricket eventually saw the team home just before tea time with 5 down. A good 5 wicket win and a nice start to the season.
