Wash Meltdown

Darji CC C.C. 235 for 7 (35 overs)
Washington C.C. 110 all out (28.1 overs)

Matt Cragoe reporting

It was meltdown for the Wash in this 35-over game against Darji at Edmonton CC on Sunday.   A crucial toss was lost, and in the heat of a broiling afternoon, Wash conceded 235 runs in 35 overs.  When it came their turn to bat, Wash finished 125 runs shy of their target.

Skipper Toby Mariner, however, refused to blame the weather.  ‘It was certainly hot’, he said afterwards, ‘but we conceded too many runs and they bowled and fielded very well.  We have to improve our all round game.’

Darji’s batsmen set off at a terrific pace.  The openers piled on 73 before the first wicket fell in the seventh over – a wicket for Gary Malcolm (2-46), who bowled exceptionally all afternoon.  The 2nd wcket partnership than added a further 80 runs in the next 10 overs, before Naveed (1-30) picked up a wicket.

Thereafter, the Wash managed to gain a slight toe-hold in the game;  the run rate slowed significantly to about 5 an over.

Various arms were turned:  Matt Cheviot (1-40) picked up a rare wicket;  Joel Braniff (0-29) had a go;  Clinton Dugmore (0-39) bowled with plenty of pace but without success; and the skipper himself picked up 3 good wickets for 49.  Aff Naseem took a good catch in the deep, running in.

Washington’s reply got off to a bad start when Braniff fell LBW to the excellent seam bowling of Anish, and got significantly worse when pinch hitter Naveed Mir, having crashed his first ball back over the bowler’s head, promptly holed out at long off.

Matt Cheviott (27) and Nick Bunney (9), both playing their second game in two days, found scoring difficult against an accurate seam attack. After 10 overs Wash had just 29 on the board.

Bunney was eventually bowled with the score on 40; thereafter, it became a procession.  Dugmore (12) hit some decent shots and Pete Lizamore (2) and Richie Canning (1) flourished briefly.  The chief resistance came at the end when Mariner (16) and Naseem (18) suddenly found their feet and started scoring at around 10 an over.

But the skipper fell to a superb catch in the deep, and Anish returned to tickle Naseem’s timbers.  Gary Malcolm (3) and David Gluckman (0 not out) presided over the closing balls of the innings.

So a big defeat for the Wash and a stark message from the skipper:  We must do better!
