New skipper Shawn Hill had a dream start as his Washington side cruised to a massive 247-run victory on Sunday. And the captain led the way, belting an imperious 65 to put his side in an unassailable position. St Alban’s oufit St John Fishers bowled first on a very dry track at North Middlesex, and were rewarded with three early wickets, as Tony Harris (13), Aff Naseem (5) and George Hope (16) all fell cheaply. But that was as good as it got for the visitors. Paul Irons (48) and debutant keeper Phil Latham (50) turned the tide, adding 90 for the fourth wicket. Tony Burt (33) and Hill kept up the tempo with some dazzling middle-order stroke play, and there was even time for tail-end pair Peter Kloss (34 not) and Dominic Butcher (16) to get in on the act, adding 58 for the tenth wicket as Wash posted a massive 309 in their 40 overs. After tea, Washington’s bowlers proved irresistible. Kloss - who saw several chances go begging - and Butcher claimed one scalp apiece, but it was Hill’s inspirational decision to bring on Taran Persaud that brought the game to a swift conclusion. Three wickets in as many overs came his way as he grabbed match figures of 3-12; Burt (2-5) and some exceptional ground fielding, which led to three run outs, did the rest. The Fishers were all washed up for 62 in just 16 overs: as the new skipper said afterwards: “the new season is well and truly OPEN!” Man of the Match: Shawn Hill for inspired captaincy Washington: Hill*, Latham+, Harris, Naseem, Hope, Irons, Burt, Cragoe, Persaud, Kloss, Butcher.
