Saturday 30th August 2003 vs Haste Hill C.C.

TONY "The Kiwi" PULLS THE STRINGS

Haste Hill C.C. 197 for 8
Washington C.C. 155 for 6

The Wash travelled to Eastcote to take on Haste Hill CC in a declaration match.

Skipper Pate Grzonka won the toss and decided The Wash should field on this overcast day.

Neil Martin(1-47) and Craig Stachurski(3-41) opened the bowling, the former a bit wayward to start, however taking the wicket of the dangerous Strutt(16) and the latter sending the opening batsmen Walker(5) and Ashton(13) back to the pavilion in a fiery spell.Stachurski grateful for two fine catches by Bracegidle at slip and the excellent Skinner keeping wicket for the first time.

Although wickets were falling Haste Hill were accumulating runs steadily, and Grzonka wanted to keep up the pressure calling upon Stoughton(2-35) and Patel(1-23) to maintain the tight disciplined attack.

Haste Hill were looking to make runs quickly so they could declare at tea with a healthy score however second change bowlers Malcolm(0-23) and Bracegirdle(1-20) bowled with tremendous accuracy forcing Haste Hill to declare on 197 for 8 from 44 overs.

The outstanding contribution from Archer(62 not out) the centrepiece of the Haste Hill innings.

In the midst of The Wash fielding stint Tony "The Kiwi" Harris severely pulled a hamstring the significance of which was still to be seen.

TEA

The Wash players at tea were pleased with their efforts however felt they would not have enough time to chase the Haste Hill score.

Dale Bracegirdle(18) and Nick Tidey(2) opened the The Washington innings,Tidey normally an opening bowler, however restricted on medical advice, was out first. He was to remain on the field longer as a runner for Tony "The Kiwi" Harris who hopped to the wicket.

A surprising failure for Bracegidle saw Greg Skinner(8) stride out to the square.

Skinner in the confusion that runners can instil was run out,not having to wait for the umpires decision.

All the while Tony "The Kiwi"Harris was making light of his torn hamstring and was playing excellent shots all round the park, however The Wash were falling behind the run rate, and with the skipper next to bat it was important he supported his ailing partner at the other end.

Harris and Grzonka pulled the Wash back into contention, scoring freely, with Nick Tidey calling and running between the wickets with ever increasing confidence.

Grzonka(37) played one extravagant shot too many and was clean bowled, hobbling Harris was still there.

Craig Stachurski was next to bat with The Wash still up with the run chase and looking for victory.

Stachurski(2) could not repeat last weekends form and was cleaned bowled.

Neil Martin was moved up the order so the run chase could be maintained. The corner stone of the Wash innings was next to fall.

Tony "The Kiwi"Harris(64) was caught in the outfield with everyone agreeing that his fine innings was very reminiscent of an injured Gordon Greenidge or Desmond Haynes, they always performed better.

David Gluckman(7 not out) joined Neil Martin(4 not out) with the overs diminishing in the face of some very tight bowling, they managed to see The Wash home to a credible draw in fading light.

The day belonged to Tony "The Kiwi nay Hobbling" Harris although he will be very sore in the morning.

Man of the Match.........Tony "The Kiwi"Harris Packing the kit..............Tony "Hobbling"Harris......Just to see how long it would take.
