Saturday 19th July 2003 vs Old Challoners C.C.

Wash scramble victory

Old Challoners C.C. 123
Washington C.C. 124-8

Old Challoners 123 Washington 124-8

Washington travelled out to Amersham for this rearranged fixture on Saturday and returned victorious – but only just. Having been set a modest target of 123, and reached 74 for the loss of just one wicket, they suddenly had the kind of collapse that keeps captains awake at night and eventually scrambled over the line with just 2 wickets in hand.

Challoners batted first and quickly ran into the brewing hurricane that is the in-form Nick Tidey. Although still only 15, he generates plenty of pace and hits the gloves hard –as Washington keeper Brad Hitchcock will testify.

Saturday saw his golden run of form continue and he picked up 3-16 in 8 overs. He was partnered by the redoubtable Pete Grzonka who picked up 1-13. Challoners were in danger of disappearing without trace: only Richardson (34) and Pain (22) seemed able to hold up the Wash attack. When the opening pair rested, Pete Demetri picked up 3-22 with his leg spin and debutant Ian Hillson snared two useful wickets.

Old Challoners looked to be heading for a total of under 100 until a quick 21 from Boventon biffed them into 3 figures.

Still, 123 was not a massive target, and, even though Rob Tidey (2) fell with only 8 on the board, Ian Gibb, who hadn’t played for 7 years, marked his comeback with a fine 51. When he was bowled by Richardson with the total on 74, however, the bottom fell out of Washington’s game.

Greg Skinner who had batted very well for 32 fell lbw, and then followed the procession: Hitchcock (0), Terry Tidey (0 - first ball!), Start Hood (5), Grzonka (0): even Demetri, playing as a bowler and batting 7, managed only 8.

Wash looked in deep trouble, and headed for certain defeat. What saved them was a cocktail of youth and experience such as only social cricket provides. The sixty-four year old David Gluckman (1 not out) and the youthful Nick Tidey (10 not out) kept their heads and steered the ship home, t ed a very curious afternoon’s cricket.

Wash: T. Tidey (*), I. Gibb, G. Skinner, B. Hitchcock, R. Tidey, S. Hood, P. Demetri, D. Gluckman, P. Grzonka, N. Tidey, I. Hillson.

Man of the Match: Nick Tidey – wickets and winning runs

Packing the Kit: His Dad – the first ball king!
