Directions to Great Gaddesden
M1 to Junction 9, turn off onto A5 signposted to Wipsnade and Dunstable.
After 2 miles, turn left into village of Markyate.
In village take a left hand turn (it’s a very obscure turning, apparently) onto a road called Pickering Road.
(NB: we should look out for a sign on the right hand side of the road saying “Beechwood School 1 ½ miles”, which is apparently right opposite Pickering Rd. If we miss the turning we’ll see a sign for the Fire Station, and must turn round and retrace our steps)
We follow Pickford Rd for 4 miles till we get to a T-Junction, and then take a left. A very short drive will bring us to a sign on the right of the road for Water End, and we follow this down to the ground.
The entrance to the ground is via an old gate with a small plaque on the front which has a whole list of other things on it (horsey things, mostly). It’s at the start of a very sharp left hand bend, on the right hand side, so we’ll trun blind across the traffic.
If we overshoot the entrance we’ll very quickly see the cricket field on our right hand side and come to a pub called the Crown and Sceptre where we can turn round and rectify our error.
